The Sunny Spessartite

In the mid-1800’s the spessartite was discovered in Spessart, Bavaria. It entered the mainstream during the 1990’s when new deposits were unearthed in Africa. Large deposits of this beautiful gemstone have been found in Mozambique, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tanzania, Kenya, Nigeria, Namibia, China, Brazil, and the U.S.

It ranges from orange to orange-red and is a form of mandarin garnet. Spessartite, also known as, Spessartine is typically untreated like most garnets. The amazing orange hue and clarity that you get from a Spessartite is straight from nature. The orange color is due to manganese and traces of iron create a reddish color.

The cost of natural spessartite garnet depends greatly on the size and color, quality.  For years, the best-known spessartite source was the Hercules Mine and the Little Three Mine that are both located in San Diego, California.

Spessartite is highly sought after by jewelry designers collectors, and gem lovers alike.
