The Cursed Black Orlov Diamond

posted in: News | 0

This Labor Day we wanted to showcase this creepy cursed black diamond.

A lot like most precious objects from history there is usually a great story. The Black Orlov Diamond originally rough 195 carat is spectacularly gorgeous but not to touch! This stone is also referred to as “The Eye Of Brahma Diamond”.  The Black Orlov ranks among the world’s most famous gems. Currently on display, you can view it at an exhibition on diamonds at London’s Natural History Museum.

Allegedly stolen from one of the eyes of the Hindu god Brahma statue in Pondicherry India by a monk, over two centuries ago. This sacrilege led this gorgeous diamond to be haunted and cursed as legend has it.The curse that seems to be associated with this gemstone is death by suicide to its owners.

J.W. Paris, who brought the diamond to America in 1932, ended up jumping to his death from a New York skyscraper. The next owners didn’t have much luck either.  The two Russian princesses, Leonila Galitsine-Bariatinsky and Nadia Vyegin-Orlov also both committed suicide only months apart. They too did so by jumping to their deaths from buildings in Rome.

After the princesses deaths the stone was cut into three different pieces. The jeweler who divided the stone in three proclaimed this division would end the curse. This may be true as the suicide stories seem to stop there. Dennis Petimezas, the current owner says he has never felt nervous about owning the Black Orlov.

Hollywood actress Felicity Huffman planned to wear the necklace at the Academy Awards in 2006. It is said that she mysteriously decided against it at the last moment. If you have any cursed or haunted gem stories, we would love to hear them on our FB page.

Have a great Labor day 2015!
