You have to see this one of a kind beauty!
THE most valuable Opal specimen uncovered ever, has just been discovered!! Called The ‘Virgin Rainbow’ this breathtaking beauty was found in the mining region of South Australia. This Opal seems alive with its glowing rainbow hues throughout.
This extremely rare multicolored Opal is worth over one million dollars. Composed of mostly water and silica it was formed over millions of years from dinosaurs opalised fossils. During the Mesozoic era, Southern Australia was a giant inland sea. At a time of many prehistoric creatures, this Opal was formed by the impression of a now extinct creature.
South Australia is where almost 90 percent of the world’s Opals come from. Due to the harsh landscape, Opals are detected in iron-rich red soil with sediments eroding from volcanic rocks. Strangely enough Opals have also been found on Mars, with its similar terrain.
The unique Virgin Rainbow will be on display at the South Australian Museum from September 25, 2015, through February 14, 2016. They will feature it during an Opals exhibition that will celebrate the centennial anniversary of mining gems in that area.
