The first few malachite deposits were located in Israel and Egypt. Malachite mines were used in the Suez and Sinai as early as 4000 B.C. Usually found as crusts or crystalline aggregates they look a lot like agates. Malachite is a mineral that were mined and used to make copper. Large deposits were discovered in the Ural Mountains of Russia.These findings supplied a wide selection of gem and sculptural material in the 1800’s. However, very little is found there today.
Malachite is known for it’s everlasting green color and its ability to be easily ground into a powder. For these reasons, it is a very popular pigment and coloring agent and has been for thousands of years.
