The gem form of the mineral Jade is made up of a microcrystalline interlocking crystal matrix. There are two variations that of Jade–Nephrite and Jadeite. Jadeite measures a 6.0 to 7.0 on Mohs hardness and Nephrite between 6.0 and 6.5. It’s hardness makes it able to be worked with garnet or quartz sand, and polished with bamboo. Jadeite is found in Russia, China and Guatemala. Nephrite deposits are found in those places in addition to the Swiss Alps and New Zealand.

Nephrite is the white jade but also has variations of green. This type was a favorite of scholars who deemed it to be the symbol of a nobleman. Jadeite, on the other hand with its bright emerald-green, pink, lavender, orange, brown and blue colors had it’s popularity grow when it became a favorite of the Qing Dynasty’s nouveau elite.

The finest objects, cult figures and grave furnishings for powerful members of the imperial family were all carved in Jade.  Today the finest jade with its marbled consistency can fetch $3,000 per ounce which is a ten-time increase from a decade ago.

Jade was known to grant longevity upon smokers who used it in their pipe. The 12th Anniversary gemstone, it is a symbol of serenity and purity that is said to increase love and to nurture. Jade brings harmony and keeps the wearer from harm which is why it’s a protective stone. Jade also attracts good luck and friendship.
